Jake Kloberdanz is ONEHOPE’s Co-Founder and CEO. In this Client Spotlight Q&A, Jake discusses the company’s mission and their experience raising growth capital with Hum.
Q: Thanks for taking the time, Jake! First, can you provide a brief overview of ONEHOPE, the founding story, and the company’s mission?
A: There is no better way to learn about ONEHOPE and our mission than our company’s core principles.
A Winery That is Built on Hope and Rooted in Purpose:
Like most stories worth telling, ours begins with a group of friends, humble beginnings, and a skyward vision. They were working for some of the world’s largest wineries and they all felt an undeniable calling to do good. What started with 168 cases and a white pick-up has grown to become a state-of-the-art flagship winery in the heart of Napa Valley.
Disrupting the Wine Industry by Building a Force for Good:
Our founders saw firsthand just how much impact a bottle of wine can have. They began hosting wine tastings to raise money for important causes and encouraged and inspired others to do the same. Today, ONEHOPE is one of the largest direct-to-consumer wineries in the world and has proudly donated over $10 million to local and global causes.
Our Wines are a Catalyst for Change:
ONEHOPE’s award-winning wines are made from the finest grapes sourced from world-renowned winemaking regions. Our commitment to quality is as strong as our commitment to the causes we support.
Nourishing the Future:
ONEHOPE is a platform for giving to your cause of choice through hosting a wine tasting, or simply purchasing our wine. If you don’t have a specific cause in mind, our Foundation gives to organizations that provide greater access to water, hunger relief, health, and education – while also supporting local non-profits across the country.
Q: Since founding ONEHOPE in 2007, what is the one thing you are most proud of?
A: I am most proud of helping to nourish the future with $10M+ in donations to over 30,000 non-profits.
Q: What is it about the entrepreneurial mindset you enjoy and what are the most important qualities one needs to be a successful entrepreneur?
A: Entrepreneurs need to be resourceful, resilient, and relentless.
Q: Why did you and the team decide to raise outside capital to help grow the business?
A: We simply did it out of necessity. As a consumer product there is a hard cost to scaling and taking on non-dilutive credit was an important element of our capitalization strategy.
Q: How did you and ONEHOPE discover Hum and what was your experience like working with Hum’s team and raising capital via the Intelligent Capital Market (ICM)?
A: We got introduced to the Hum team through a mutual business contact.
Q: Can you tell us about the investor ONEHOPE matched with, and what stood out about their investment proposal that drew you to raise capital from them?
A: They were comfortable underwriting wine inventory marketed through a unique business model like ours.
